Our Fishball Stories: Reviewing Popular Bak Chor Mee & Fish Ball Noodles At Seng Huat Coffee House In Bugis

Singapore Fish Ball Noodles - Seng Huat Mushroom Minced Meat Noodles

Minced Meat Noodles (Bak Chor Mee) and Fish Ball Noodles are often sold at the same noodle stalls in Singapore. This began when fish ball noodle stalls began to add minced meat to their fish ball dishes in the late 1960s to enhance the taste and flavours. The inclusion of minced meat, also known as bak chor in the chinese hokkien and teochew language, enhances the noodles with a rich umami flavour. Although Bak Chor is in hokkien, the dish is actually of Teochew descent.

We went to try out the Seng Huat Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle at 492 North Bridge Rd, situated within Seng Huat Coffee House for a review on their handmade fishball noodles. Read on to find out more!

We went with the mee pok or flat yellow noodle option, a common option to go with the vinegary and spicy sauce that is tossed with the noodles as it is able to hold more sauce with a larger surface area compared to the other options. If you like your noodles to be more flavourful, try the kway teow or flat rice noodle option as this soaks up the most gravy in the dish.

Fish Balls & Fish Cakes

The fish ball were large and fresh with a perfect bounce and seafood umami flavour. The savoury fishballs went very well with the other elements in the fish ball noodles as they provided additional texture to the many elements within the dish. The fish cakes were sliced thinly and held a less savoury note but was still flavourful. There were two types of fish cakes, fried and steamed, to contrast the different textures within the dish. Lots of fishy goodness with the fish balls and fish cakes overpopulating the bowl of noodles.

We thoroughly enjoyed the dish, and it is no wonder why it has customers coming back for more after decades in operation. They are also not too far off from the Michelin-crowned Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle at Crawford Lane. Try it out when you are in the area!
